A Word From our President

Hello,

Healthy aging programs often focus on problems that are tangible with solutions we can see with our own eyes. We can observe someone’s physical condition deteriorating and, if we get them to exercise, we can see a solution in action. Walking up to the door and delivering a box of healthy meals is an observable solution to food insecurity. The powerful impact of social connectedness and having a sense of purpose is less tangible, but equally important in supporting the health and wellbeing of older adults. We can’t easily observe someone feeling lonely or bored, but the effects in terms of cost and quality of life are well documented.

This is a widespread and challenging problem, but there are solutions. It takes time for people to develop a sense of belonging and to begin to look forward to each new day and, unfortunately, it’s hard to measure, but when it happens it’s magical!
